Isaac Abravanel or Abarbanel (Lisbon, 1437 - Venice, 1508) was a Jewish-Portuguese (Sephardic) theologian, Bible commentator and political activist. Highly educated and noble, he consecutively served the Portuguese king and the Spanish Catholic monarchs and did what was humanly possible to save his people from being expelled. Being unable to prevent the expulsion, he led the march of the rest of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula. Isaac Abravanel's legacy in terms of humanism, political commitment, activism and quest for justice is the axiological guideline of our Foundation and its source of inspiration. |
